Actually, Amazon offers free software applications that enable to read Kindle ebooks on Windows , Macintosh OS/X, Linux and smartphones.
You can download the Windows viewer here.
There are a number of free ebooks available, as well as the ones you have to pay for.

You’re quite right. My mistake. It looks like you can read Kindle books in Linux via WINE and version 5.2 of the Kindle for Windows viewer, but there’s no native reader.
